Sunrise Rotary Club is a small, but mighty service club of professional men and women devoted to making a difference in the community, whether that’s a neighborhood, our city, our state or globally. Our full name is West Sedgwick County Sunrise Rotary Club. We meet for breakfast --- 7 am to 8 am every Thursday at Rolling Hills Country Club. But we are more than a breakfast club. Our list of community service projects rivals many larger clubs.
We were founded in 2001 with 24 charter members. Twelve charter members remain active members of the Sunrise Rotary Club today. In 2018, our membership is 40 strong representing diverse professions.
Kensler Elementary School, a Wichita public school for grades Pre-K through 5, was designated as an ESOL (English as a Second Language) for the west quadrant of the city. Seventy percent of the teachers in the building are ESOL certified. Of the 630 students enrolled at Kensler, 21 percent are in the ESOL program.
The Sunrise Rotary Club awards a Citizenship award monthly. Students are selected from each classroom in a specific grade level and are recognized by a Sunrise Rotarian for their self-responsibility and encouragement of others. A top Citizenship award is then given to one student in that grade level who receives a cuddly blanket in the school’s colors made by the West Wichita Interact students.
Each Thanksgiving season, the Sunrise Rotary Club provides food to selected families in the school who need extra help. The Club also renovated the school’s outdoor courtyard classroom, and from time-to-time we provide needed school supplies or help with special school activities.
